Final Tournament UEFA European Football Championship


Sixteen teams progress to the finals for the 2008 tournament, they will winners and finalists of the seven qualifying groups and joint hosts Austria and Switzerland. These sixteen teams are divided into four groups A, B, C and D, consisting of four teams each. The groups are set by the UEFA administration, again using seeding. The seeded teams will be the host country, the coefficients of the title holder, subject to qualification, and those with the most points per game through the qualifying round of the tournament and the previous World Cup. The other finalists will be divided in a draw with coefficients based.

The four groups are again played in a league format, in which a team plays its opponents once each. The same points system is used (three points for a win, one point for a draw, none for a defeat). A timetable for the group games will be constructed, but the last two games in a group should start simultaneously. The winners and finalists from each group progressing to meet the quarter-finals, where a knockout system is used (the two teams again, the winner progresses), it is used in all subsequent rounds. The winners of the quarter-finals match progress in the semifinals, where the winners play in the final. If in a knockout, the scores are still tied after regulation time, overtime and penalties are used to separate the two teams. This tournament is in contrast to the FIFA World Cup is not about one third Place play-off.
